Honor is a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner, in accordance with the standards of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA), and an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) who used to teach at the Elementary level. Having had an aunt who taught dyslexic students for many years in the UK, Honor grew up aware of dyslexia and its many challenges, and of just how fulfilling it can be to help students who have always struggled to achieve a mastery of the printed word. Frustrated by the lack of specific teacher training available to train educators to help struggling readers and writers in Ontario, Honor began seeking out alternatives to courses that were offered within the confines of Ontario teacher “additional qualifications”. She found Orton-Gillingham training, and qualified as an Orton-Gillingham practitioner at the Academy Associate Level (AOGPE). While continuing to seek out and take advantage of new professional development opportunities, Honor discovered Structured Word Inquiry (WordWorks Kingston), which examines the English writing system through a scientific lens, and demonstrates that English spelling isn’t crazy; it makes sense if you understand the rules that govern it. A dedicated lifelong learner, Honor strives to continually deepen her understanding of how the language system works, studying with renowned orthographic linguist Dr Gina Cooke in Arizona (Linguist Educator Exchange, LEX), and to share that understanding with her students. She has taught English as a Second (official) Language to military personnel (at every level from basic beginner to advanced preparation for the Public Service Test), and currently runs a private on-line tutoring practice which focuses on dyslexia intervention.
